Mrs. Kalk

One of our goals is to improve the vocabulary of our students.  I have been getting many of our vocabulary words from our read-out-louds and our guided reading books.  I pick words that children are unfamiliar with or unable to tell the meaning.  Some words we work with are:
bonnet mischief clogs perfect
dreadful shade escalator elevator
helicopter calf lamb foal
cub fawn turtle mosquito
flea minnow howdy

You may want to keep these ideas in mind for reading activities and different approaches you might use.  We encourage you to visit local libraries and read with your child!

Our word wall words are sight words the children learn to recognize and spell.  They are introduced at the rate of five words every two weeks.  We practice with these words to help learn them.  Our goal is to recognize them quickly when reading and to use them to make our writing easier and faster. The following list is what we will (hopefully) cover during the kindergarten year.  Please help your child review the words at home, too.

Mrs. Kalk's Golden Rules

Let others work and learn without being disturbed.
Be kind to yourself and others.

Looking for ways to help your child succeed in school?

Try practicing these skills at home:

Writing and spelling their name.
Writing and counting from zero to ten.
Recognizing letters (the ABC's).
Recognizing colors and shapes.

At our school, reading and writing are priorities.  We are teaching children to live a readerly life.  Here are some ways you can help:

  • Enjoy books together.  Talk about and act our favorite parts.

  • Retell stories that are familiar.  Have children retell the story in their own words.

  • Keep books and magazines around and spend time with them when you are waiting in the car, at the dentist, etc.

  • Be an active member of the 1000 Book Program.

  • Treat books respectfully.
