This year our second grade author study is examining the life and books of Laura Ingalls Wilder.  We are reading, discussing, and writing about her stories.  It is a good way to learn about pioneer life, as well.

In Writer's Workshop we are writing book response.  We are using a four paragraph format.  The first paragraph includes an interesting lead, the title and author, and let's the audience know if it is fictional or non-fiction.  The second paragraph deals with the characters, story problem, and a brief synopsis.  The third paragraph is for the reviewer to share his/her opinions about the book and provide examples from the text.  Finally, the fourth paragraph allows the reviewer to recommend the book to a particular person or group of readers and a closing for the book response.

Here is one of our second grade book responses:

Have you ever read the book Abraham Lincoln's Hat?  It is by Martha Brenner.  It was a magnificent non-fiction book.
Abraham Lincoln was a superb president.  The problem is Abraham Lincoln was forgetful.  With so many important papers he needed to find a safe place to keep them.
I loved the book because I like to learn about Abraham Lincoln.  He was a very tall man with a very tall hat.  Everyone loved Abraham Lincoln because he was honest and told great stories.  This book gave many interesting stories about Abraham Lincoln.  He is my favorite president, he was very brave.

If you like Abraham Lincoln you would enjoy this book.  It lets you learn about some of the fun things that went on in his life.  You may even learn a neat thing about that tall hat he wore.  I hope you enjoy reading this book.

The Jester Has Lost His Jingle

The Jester Has Lost His Jingle  by David Saltzman?  Well, there is a Jester that does silly things to make the King laugh.  One day the Jester does everything he can to make the King laugh, but nothing works.  The King fires him.  The Jester goes to the city where nobody laughs.  The Jester visits a hospital and meets a girl.  She is not laughing, but he tries to get a little giggle.  The girl and the Jester save the day.  You will have to read the book to find out what happens.  I recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh.

A Bad, Bad Day

Hurry, hurry!  Get out of bed!  Have you ever started out a day like that?  A Bad, Bad Day by Kristen Hall is a fictional book about a young boy's day.  Harry lives with his mom, the problem is Harry's day starts by hitting his head on the light.  But the day just keeps getting worse and worse.  How could it get any worse you might ask?  Well, you'll just have to read the book.
I enjoyed this book because it has very sill parts.  For example, he squirts toothpaste onto his shirt and has to change.  If you've ever had a day that starts out in a bad way then this book is for you.  It helps you find the silliness in a bad day!

Stone Fox
Do you know who Little Willie is?  He's the main character in Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner.  This fictional story is packed with action.  The problem is Willie's Grandpa is sick because of taxes.  Willie needs to find money to pay the taxes.  Then Willie sees a poster and it said there is going to be a dog sled race for a lot of money!  Willie really wants to win it for Grandpa.  Searchlight is Willie's only dog.  She is a hard working dog and very faithful.  Stone Fox is an Indian with a seven dog team.  This book is serious, it is sad.
I like this book because Willie takes responsibility and works hard for Grandpa.  I would recommend this book to people who like dogs and dog sled races.  Do you want to know who wins the race?  If you do, read Stone Fox.
