Urban Life at the Turn of the Century

TASK

Create a graphic organizer that illustrates several characteristics of urbanization in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. Your project should include the following:

  • Impact of immigration, rural to urban migration and population pressures
  • Municipal problems including sanitation, housing conditions, living conditions, police & fire protection etc.
  • Impact of technological innovations including new transportation, communication, and energy systems, consumer goods, etc.
  • Opportunities for leisure and recreation.
  • Solutions/Reforms designed to solve these problems and improve the quality of life in American cities.

Requirements

This project should...

  • Be constructed in a way that clearly illustrates interconnections between different aspects of urbanization.
  • Be richly illustrated with photos, drawings, graphs, charts, and/or maps
  • Support your graphic organizer with some quotes from primary sources.
  • Demonstrate thorough research from both the textbook and online sources.
  • Be a collaborative effort in which each group member participates to the best of his or her ability.
