The Camden Central School District is proud of its students and their accomplishments. An overwhelming majority of high school graduates go on to college and many are accepted at the top universities in our country. This past school year a team from Camden went to the World Odyssey of the Mind competition in Colorado. They were the first team from Camden to ever qualify for the world competition. In their region, they were also the first team to get to world competition in 15 years. In the National Shakespeare Oratory Competition our High School had a record number of 22 students compete in the event! These accomplishments are made possible by a number of factors but one of the most important is the coordinated emphasis on these programs from the elementary through high school levels. Enrichment begins in the elementary schools with programs offered in each school during the year and learning camps during the summer. Miss Cindy Kirkley is in charge of coordinating enrichment programs in all of the elementary schools during the school year. In the summer, enrichment camps in the areas of mathematics, science, performing arts and computer technology are given to qualified elementary school children by teachers who are specialists in the chosen subject fields. From elementary to the high school level, Camden schools have students who participate in Odyssey of the Mind competitions. Odyssey of the Mind is an international organization that fosters creative thinking by presenting students with a diverse set of problems that challenge their creative problem-solving skills. Competitions are held regionally throughout the United States. Recently, a Camden High School team qualified for the World competition in Colorado. Some of the students were Odyssey of the Mind veterans who had been competing in these events since fifth grade in Camden! Clubs also play an important role in the enrichment process. In the Camden elementary schools there are computer clubs, student councils, book clubs, orchestras, and choruses. On the middle and high school level, there are a wealth of clubs for students to participate in. There is an active drama department that produces plays of top-notch quality that are eagerly anticipated by Camden residents. In addition, students have been so motivated that a Shakespeare oratory contest that at best gets two to three competitors from a school, had twenty-two entrants from Camden! The Bard would be happy. Students in Camden are indeed lucky to have such diverse, rich programs offered to them from elementary school onward by a staff and school system that are devoted to not only educating students but helping them to develop skills and attitudes that will enhance their lives.
