Summer Enrichment Programs 2005

The Camden Central School District offers summer enrichment programs for qualified third and fourth-grade elementary school students in science, technology, mathematics, performing arts, and this year for the first time, jazz. The camp enrollments are kept small to optimize the educational experience. In total approximately 80 children attend each year. Free transportation is offered. The program is coordinated by Annsville Elementary Principal Patricia Fallon and funded by the Camden Central School District, which firmly believes in the long-term value of enriching the lives of its students.

The camps are two weeks long, from July 18-July 29 and meet each day from 9 a.m. to noon.

Science

Discover at the Playground!

The playground is one of everybody’s favorite places to play. Did you know that it is also a great place to learn about science? Almost all of the fun things at the playground rely on the laws of science. From the slide and the merry-go-round to the wing and the seesaw – you will see the whole world in a new and different way.

Technology

The campers will learn how to make their own website. On the very first day, they will actually make a webpage using Microsoft FrontPage. They will also learn how to use digital cameras. By the time the course is over, the campers will be fluent in computer techniques, digital photography, and the use of computer software programs necessary to create webpages. On the last day of camp, the campers will show their parents the amazing computer skills they have acquired and demonstrate their work. Click here to see webpages made by last year's campers.

Performing Arts

Lights! Camera! Action!

Join with other third and fourth graders who enjoy performing. This year’s musical will be “Once Upon a Lily Pad.” The Purpose of this show is not only to entertain, but also to convey the heart-warming message that each of us is special if we just let our own light shine. Learn the techniques of each step in the process of putting on a show, including: basic stage terminology, blocking, using a microphone, developing self-confidence, and rehearsing.

There's no business like show business!

Math

Get Real: Math in Every Day Life

Have you ever asked yourself the question, “When will I ever use this math concept in the real world?” If you have, then the Summer Math Enrichment Camp is the place for you!

Math is everywhere! During this 2 week camp, you’ll explore math in a variety of ways. You’ll investigate math in careers, places around town, sports events, and in other real life experiences.

Where else would you have the opportunity to do each of these activities?

  • Use your very own checkbook to purchase supplies
  • Estimate the cost of your favorite meal from McDonald’s and eat it too!
  • Figure out your batting average
  • Calculate your score when you go bowling
  • Create a wish list of items you want to buy with your yearly allowance
Through problem solving, manipulatives, hands-on activities, and higher level thinking you’ll “Get Real” with math in your every day life.

Instructors: Amy Paul and Michelle Dailey

Jazz

New this year to our summer enrichment programs is a jazz camp! The camp will be taught by Mrs. Morehouse and Mrs. Skovenski. Students are selected by teacher recommendation and audition, and must be entering seventh or eighth grade in the fall. Those chosen to participate will have high level of technical ability on their instruments, as well as a desire to broaden their horizons with a new type of music. Students will explore the many existing jazz forms, learn blues scales, learn to improvise, and will create their own individual jazz compositions that they will perform in a concert at the end of the session. They will also host a guest jazz performer, and take a field trip to Alfred Publishing, where they will see how music is printed, and possibly meet a visiting composer. There will be daily rehearsals to prepare two full group jazz compositions as will. Students must attend each day of the camp, which will run Monday-Friday, July 18 th-29 th from 9:00 A.M. to 12 P.M.

Instructors: Martha Skovenski and Michelle Morehouse
