The moose is a strong Adirondack animal with thick brown fur. Did you know a moose can stand up to seven and a half feet tall? The length of the moose is six feet without its antlers. It can weigh up to 1,000 pounds, which is much as a small car.

Only the male moose has antlers. The moose has loose skin under its chin called the dewlap. The moose has a droopy nose and a small tail.

You can find the moose in the northern forests of North America, Europe and Russia. It lives in open fields near water. The moose flattens the grass to make a bed to lie down. The moose sleeps in meadows. It cools off by standing in a lake or river.

The moose is a plant eater - a herbivore. It likes willow, aspen and birch twigs. It also eats grasses, roots and pond weeds. They will also eat horse tails. They gather their food in the water.

A baby moose is called a calf. Its mother is a cow and the its father is a bull. Calves are born in May or June. The cow defends her calves from bears and wolves. She puts her ears back, lowers her head and attacks. She also kicks. A calf stays with its mother until the next spring. Moose shed their thick winter coats in spring. In the fall it grows back. Moose can run up to 35 miles per hour.

The Indians believe that a moose is a good sign. If you dream of a moose you will live a longer life.

Moose wander into the road to lick the salt off the roads in the springtime. The moose is the biggest deer in the deer family. Moose can live in the wild for seventeen years.
