Mrs. Chauncey's Newsletter
April 2002

Dear Parents,

I think we made it!  We survived a L-O-N-G, but light winter.  We hope now for a lovely, long, warm spring.  The children are certainly anxious to get outdoors and let loose!

We are well into our fraction unit.  Most students are catching on.  It is one of the more difficult units in fifth grade math.  We will be taking a new type of test this month in math. It is called Milestones.  This spring is only a piloting of the test.  Next year’s class will be fully involved.  Your child’s grade in math will not be affected by this pilot test.

We finally got our penpal letters out last week.  It was a struggle amongst the moving and having no computers on which to work.  We are scheduled to move back into our former rooms on Tuesday, April 2nd.

We are beginning the month touring the southeastern states in social studies class.  Many students have visited these sates and are excited to share their knowledge.

I have found it necessary to have several heart-to-heart talks with the class recently about the quality of their work.  Papers that are presented in a sloppy or incomplete manner are unacceptable and will be returned for corrections.  You could help me by impressing upon your youngster the importance of doing their best at school.

We have begun reading a very challenging novel entitled Incident at Hawk’s Hill by Allan Eckert.  It is based on a true story about a small boy and a badger.  The kids are really getting hooked!

Thank you for continuing to sign Friday Folders and late homework sheets.
