McConnellsville Hosts Back to School Bash

McConnellsville, NY - Students at McConnellsville Elementary School had an opportunity to have some late summer fun while ringing in a new school year as the McConnellsville PTO hosted its “Back to School Bash” on Wednesday, August 25th.

Students, teachers, and families gathered for a fun night of activities, along with an opportunity to meet with school staff and drop off supplies. Through the generous support of the PTO, the night’s activities included an inflatable slide and obstacle course, face painting, free popcorn, and an ice cream truck visit with a free ice cream treat for every student in attendance.

The event was very well-attended, with the school’s parking lot completely full.

Central to the night’s festivities was one of the first public opportunities for McConnellsville to welcome back one of its very own as the school’s new principal. Camden Central School District alumna Mrs. Heidi Allen was appointed to that role this summer. She began her education as a McConnellsville Elementary student, and attended school at the original building from 1979 to 1984.

“I have to pinch myself every time I pull in because I've come full circle,” Allen said. “I’m so excited to be taking over. I feel like I've come back home… Once you are a Camden alumni, you are always part of this community. When you come back, you feel like you still belong right where you started.”

Making sure the building feels like the home-away-from-home she knew at McConnellsville will be a priority under Allen’s leadership. In that spirit, she partnered with the PTO to plan this event, along with many others throughout the year.

“We have an incredible PTO,” Allen said. “We set up a meeting right out of the gate and planned events for the entire year. I really wanted to have a community event before school started to meet families, and have kids feel comfortable coming back to school in hopefully a more typical way for this school year. We’ve had a great turnout and a lot of community support…. It’s been great.”

The first day of school in the Camden Central School District is Tuesday, September 7th. On that day, you can be sure that as students and teachers return to the classroom, they will have a principal who is every bit as excited as they are.
