Camden Athletes Set To Lend A Hand To Kentucky Relief Efforts

In the wake of a recent natural disaster in the Southern United States, a group of student-athletes who attend Camden High School have decided to bring together service and competition over their upcoming February break.

Camden students Will Carver, Lizzy Lucason, Dillan Melchiore, Ivy Murphy, Joe Doran, and Nate Hurd have independently organized an effort to spend their break period near Mayfield, Kentucky, aiding in relief efforts in response to the destructive tornadoes that hit the area on December 10th.

The group will depart on Saturday, February 19th. En route to Kentucky, the students will be competing in a track meet in Youngstown, Ohio under the banner of the "Camden Country Running Club". They will then continue on to their destination, where they will be participating in cleanup and/or rebuilding efforts for 8 to 10 hours a day throughout the week. They will depart for home on Friday, February 25th.

The group has been in contact with area church groups about providing assistance, and the students’ efforts and willingness to assist in a time of great need have been met with overwhelming gratitude.

To help raise money for this incredible endeavor, the students have received monetary donations and also hosted a successful bottle and can drive in some less-than-ideal weather on January 2nd.

To help make the maximum impact possible over the course of the trip, the group is continuing to seek support from the Camden community. There are many ways you can help.

Monetary donations are being put in the care of Mrs. Diane Reed and the Camden Cross Country Booster Account. Donations can be sent via check to:

Funds will be used towards the cost of the trip, and also to relay donations to area groups that are coordinating the relief efforts.

The only equipment items the students will need are work gloves and boots. In addition, the group is also seeking donations of beverages and sealed food items, such as canned goods or snacks. Pick-up of those donations can be arranged by contacting coach Phil Lucason at 315-709-9958.
