Todd Willson is on the range and getting ready to go at today's state qualifier round in Hamilton! Decent temperatures and a clear morning sky should help the round get off to a good start. Good luck!

Awesome job by the MOBOCES Carpentry Class in helping out one of our Camden CSD neighbors to improve the accessibility of their home. Camden senior Tyler Skinner makes a brief appearance towards the end.

On May 11, 2023, Mrs. Harney’s MVCC Dual Credit History classes (US & NYS) participated in a local history research field experience in the Florence Hill NYS Forest Preserve. Students worked alongside ten professionals from the NYS DEC, NYS Museum, Hartgen Archeological Associates, and The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence museum.
Students learned about public lands, state forests, public history, NYS archeology, historic preservation, and the Florence Farming Community from the 1850s.
The Florence Farming Settlement was established around 1845 near this site. It was intended to create a community where free blacks could own land and farm. Local abolitionist and philanthropist Gerrit Smith gifted the land to several settlers and through the agency of Stephen Myers, roughly 80-90 black families called Florence home by 1849. For a few years, this small community flourished until the growing tension leading up to the Civil War compromised their safety. After 1860, the Florence Farming Association ceased to exist and the community disbanded.
Students had opportunities to use research equipment like GPS/GNSS Trimble, GPS handheld devices and metal detection. Students contributed 6 hours of public history research that also counted as community service hours. Professional archeologists from the NYS Museum modeled additional data collection techniques such as Magnetic Susceptibility Meter. Students learned about the laws around NYS Forest Preserves and state lands from our local Region 6 DEC Forester Jessica Mosher from the Herkimer office who assisted the team with permits for research for educational purposes.
Special thanks to the Florence town board members and Town Supervisor Scott Outrim for their hospitality during the lunch break at the town hall.

A few snaps we took of last Monday's JV Softball game against Utica Proctor!

We were very pleased with the turnout for Wednesday's art show! The student artwork was as impressive as the community's support for it. We look forward to letting you know about the award winners soon!
