On January 31st, students at Camden High, participated in the English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare competition. This year marked the 30th anniversary for Camden in the event. Students had to memorize and perform a 20 line monologue from a Shakespearean work. In the school-wide competition, Camden presented awards to six honorees.
Marley Hilliker, Trevor Young, and Dylan Keyes earned an honorable mention. Isabella Wing took 3rd place and 2nd place was awarded to Alyssa Vera. This year’s winner was Owen Carr, who portrayed Shylock from The Merchant of Venice.
The competition proved to be a challenge for the finalists, all of whom aspired to place first, and earn the chance to serve as Camden’s representative for the regional round in Syracuse. Next month, Owen will head to Syracuse Stage to perform his monologue and a Shakespearean sonnet. The winner of the regional competition will advance to nationals in New York City.
