September is Suicide Awareness Month
Three members of the Camden High School FFA chapter recently put their knowledge of poultry to the test against their peers from across the state, and proved that they could “talk turkey” - and other birds - with the best of the best. Students Mary Hall, Matthew Albrecht, and Kayla Winn competed in the New York State FFA Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event held at the Great New York State Fair on Friday, August 23rd. A Career Development Event is a competitive exercise that is designed to build knowledge and skills in an agriculture-relevant area, while also promoting critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and problem solving among its participants. In the case of the Poultry Evaluation CDE, students were tasked with evaluating chickens, eggs, and finished products, along with providing justification for their decisions. They also must identify poultry parts, do a carcass grading exercise, and complete a written general knowledge exam. The contest is an intensive experience that lasts about two hours from start to finish. Camden sent its competitors to participate as individuals in the senior (Grades 7-12) division. In the individual standings, freshman Mary Hall placed fifth, sophomore Matthew Albrecht was tenth, and freshman Kayla Winn placed 13th. The group was led by High School FFA advisor Erin Curtis Szalach. “I am so proud of the effort these students put into practicing for this CDE,” She said. “This was one of their first times competing in a state CDE and they rocked it! They are already EGG-cited for next year and have set great goals for themselves individually and as a team!”

Mr. Calkins and Mr. Petrie had students in their DDP (Design Drawing and Production) classes get right to work on Thursday with a favorite first day activity: The Paper Tower Challenge! The goal is to build the tallest possible free-standing structure using only three sheets of paper and 24 inches of tape. We saw a school record last year, and this year, the students delivered as the bar was raised even further by Gabe Grinnell and Colton Schuler! The pair built a tower that stood at an incredible 76.5 inches tall. The previous record, set last year by Corbin Marsh and Brayden Seymour, was 73.5 inches. Colton and Gabe will have their names added to Mr. Petrie’s “Wall of Fame” for their achievement.

Share those first day moments with us! If you'd like to share your first day of school pictures with us and don't mind us sharing them, send them to camdenphotos@camdencsd.org and we'd love to feature as many as we possibly can. While we know that it is a very popular trend right now, we ask that you please refrain from submitting pictures to us with signs containing information about your child. We're looking forward to getting the year started!

On Saturday, the girls varsity soccer team made these t-shirts as a team building activity. Each player's shirt features the handprints of their teammates, and hopefully, that feeling of connectedness off the field sets the tone for a great season on it. The girls open the season on Thursday with a TVL matchup against Oneida. Kick time is set for 4:30!

Renowned science educator Steve Spangler is up to address the staff at this morning's opening day program. Considering we've already had Mrs. Allen holding a leaf blower, and a whole bunch of toilet paper is now in the front row, we think it's off to a good start.
