Student and Mrs. Thomas at the Book Fair

CAMDEN, NY - Thanks to the continued generosity of our valued community members, elementary students in the Camden Central School District will have no shortage of fresh and exciting reading material for the upcoming summer break. Camden Elementary School and McConnellsville Elementary School were each given the opportunity to host a special Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday, May 31st, to Monday, June 6th.

What made this particular book fair special was the cost for students and families. This book fair was conducted at no charge, thanks to a special grant from the Virginia Tuthill Foundation. Virginia Tuthill and her husband Stedman were longtime residents of Camden who believed in supporting educators and students. After Stedman passed away in 1993, a yearly grant was set up in the family name to provide books for Camden students, as well as the Camden Library where Virginia served as a board member. Virginia lived until 2014, to the impressive age of 102. At the book fair, each student was provided with 25 dollars to spend on the heavily discounted books available. They were able to shop during their normally scheduled library time. These books will provide an opportunity for students to continue their reading habits in a subject area that interests them. In addition, this event provides easy access to books for all students, including students who may otherwise have difficulty getting access to literature during the Summer months. The District is thankful for the Tuthill family for continuing to provide this generous support to its students, and eternally grateful to Virginia and Stedman Tuthill for including our schools as part of their legacy.
