Wednesday's Q&A session with Rick Yarosh of Sweethearts and Heroes was a wonderful experience for our CMS students!
The students got a chance to go back and forth with Rick on several topics that helped them understand his experiences. Rick, of Windsor, NY, was a five year veteran of the United States Army who had his life changed forever by an IED explosion during a tour of duty in Iraq. He travels to schools with his organization to spread his message of HOPE (Hold On, Possibilities Exist).
As an added bonus, we had the opportunity to see his Purple Heart up close and personal today, which is an especially powerful reminder of what it takes to serve with Veterans Day taking place over the weekend.
We would like to thank Rick and his associate Tom Murphy for spending the last two days with our students, and our students for being an incredibly supportive and engaged audience.

Faculty and Staff at CMS had the opportunity to meet with Tom Murphy and Rick Yarosh from Sweethearts and Heroes to follow up on the incredible presentations that our students saw. They learned that the #1 key to learning is having FUN!

FFA members are "GROWING" at the Grow-NY Summit in Binghamton NY! Students participated in workshops as well as watched many agricultural inventors with million dollar pitches!

Sixth grade students took a deep dive into character development by creating a character autopsy after reading, "The Secret Sheriff of Sixth Grade," by Jordan Sonnenblick. Students used their evidence to “dissect” the traits of a character and discover how the character evolved through the course of the story.

Students in Mrs. Kuc's classes created turkey hands in Spanish to describe what they are thankful for this season.

Mr. Paul Miller of the Tug Hill Chapter of Trout Unlimited delivered Brook Trout eggs to Mrs. Lapier, Mrs. Wilcox, and Mrs. Turner's classrooms at CMS. He also delivered eggs to Mr. Janes at Camden Elementary! Students will raise the fish, make connections to their science curriculums, and celebrate with a fish release in the spring of 2024! Thank you to the Tug Hill chapter for their continued support of our Trout in the Classroom program!

Mrs. Willson's math students start each morning by figuring the fraction, decimal, and percent equivalents to how many days we've been in school. Today students determined that we've been in school for 45 days which is 1/4 or 25% of the school year!

7th and 8th grade students participating in Sweethearts and Heroes assembly today at Camden Middle School

Today all CMS students had the opportunity to see the powerful Sweethearts and Heroes presentation. Ask your students what H.O.P.E. means (hold on, possibilities are endless) and about the ABCs that they learned. The presenters Rick Yarosh and Tom Murphy also donated enough food for 25 families for Thanksgiving dinner. It was an AWESOME day at CMS!

8th graders at CMS recently worked their way through an abrasion lab in science.

Mrs.Sullivan's 6th grade history class is studying Stone Age technology.

Mrs. Smith’s 7th grade US History classes recently completed a unit of study on the Haudenosaunee. Team GOAT welcomed Juanita Willson as she told students the Creation Story of the Haudenosaunee people as well as various aspects of their culture. Most know the Haudenosaunee as the Iroquois Nation. Juanita is a member of the Wolf Clan of the Mohawk Nation, local owner of the Full Moon Reflections Art Gallery, and retired CMS teacher.
Mrs. Willson brought in the moose antler carving she created that depicts important elements of Haudenosaunee culture: the nine clans, White Pine of Peace, the bald eagle, Thunder Beings, Sky Woman and Turtle Island. We are very grateful that Mrs. Willson came in and provided the students with a Native perspective on the Thanksgiving story and the arrival of Europeans to North America. The Native perspective is usually missing from textbooks and storybooks which results in one sided version of history. Thank you Mrs. Willson for expanding the minds of our CMS students.

Our Camden Middle School Media Center Staff thanks all those who served this Veterans Day. Pictured is a small selection of our books on Veterans Day.
