This week is Red Ribbon Week (October 23rd to October 31st). The Red Ribbon Campaign, founded in 1985, is the Nation's longest-running drug abuse awareness program. Since 1988, Red Ribbon Week has stood as an occasion to educate about the dangers presented by drugs, and encourage all youth to commit to a drug-free lifestyle in the long term.
As part of this year's celebrations at CHS and CMS, our CFLR Prevention Specialist, Ambur Kowalski, arranged to have Reality Check visit during lunch periods to speak with students about the dangers of vaping and how marketing targets youth. As part of the week, students created drawings and wrote pledges reflecting their commitment to staying drug-free.

Mrs. Christmas had a 6th grade pumpkin painting party with her ELA students! To get there, students had to hold up their end of the deal. Every student needed to receive an 80 percent or better score on a recent test, and the class delivered on their word to earn this reward! Way to go!

With Halloween tomorrow, and students learning about Colonial America, Mrs. Smith’s class at Camden Middle School did a simulation activity centering around how witch trials worked in New England back in the 1600s. For this activity, she put the entire class under the impression that one student had been assigned the role of “witch”, and challenged the students to solve the mystery.
The students formulated their hypotheses and brought forth their allegations - but there was an important plot twist that changed everything: There was no “witch” after all!
The activity was designed to teach the class about how mob mentality and hysteria can lead to false accusations, just as those factors led people to be prosecuted for witchcraft centuries ago.
In a fascinating turn of fortune, the activity also aligns with Mrs. Smith’s own family history. She discussed her own family genealogy research with the class. That research revealed a family connection back to Lydia Gilbert, who was the second woman and seventh person to be convicted of witchcraft in the State of Connecticut in 1654.

You never know where you'll find a new twin! Our own Sunshine Britton did exactly that at today's Leatherstocking Regional Conference for library staff! She came across Library TA Melanie Goodwin from the Gilboa-Conesville Central School, and knew she had to get a picture!
Sunshine and her CMS Library colleague, Jennine Bloomquist, were two of the conference's featured presenters this year!

The greenhouse management class has been hard at work growing strawberries! The strawberries are grown using only water and nutrients without soil! The students care for 150 strawberry plants to ensure the best food quality! Today was berry exciting as the students collected their first harvest!

Our sixth grade lunch bunch is hard at work on a 300 piece puzzle in the Middle School Media Center. They have been working the last few lunch periods. 🧩

The Camden Middle School Social Studies department is now up to $980.00 raised for their “Field of Flags” program, and sit just 20 dollars of donations away from another two dozen flags - or 96 in total! Through the support of the CCSD Community, they have almost doubled up their initial target of $500.00.
The “Field of Flags” program will create a powerful veterans’ day flag display at Camden Middle School, along with raising money for the Disabled American Veterans organization, which helps veterans navigate and gain access to employment assistance, education, financial benefits, healthcare, disability assistance, and other benefits they’ve been promised. They also provide transportation to and from VA facilities to ensure all veterans can get the medical care they require.
CMS Students will visit the display for a lesson on Veterans Day during their Social Studies classes on Monday, November 10th.
Here’s how it works:
1. Visit https://support.dav.org/participant/CamdenMiddleSchool.
2. Select the amount you’d like to donate. Currently, they sit at $60.00 of a $500.00 starting goal. For each $250.00 raised, CMS receives two dozen flags with the proceeds going to help DAV in their mission. Assuming they receive the first two dozen flags, the display will proceed as planned.
Questions can be directed to Jeff Doran at jdoran@camdencsd.org.
