You may know about Camden Middle School's involvement in the "Trout In The Classroom" program, but did you know that we now have a group of third grade students participating?
Teacher Garrett Janes brought the initiative to Camden Elementary School after offering it to his students in his prior role at Oriskany, and the project is just as exciting with a younger group as it is for the older students.
Students raise fish from eggs to fry that are mature enough to be released into the Mad River here in Camden. This year, the group had the unexpected opportunity to raise landlocked Atlantic Salmon after a mid-year power outage cost them their original group of Brook Trout.
While participating, the students learn valuable lessons in personal responsibility for the fish, and for the environment around them. They also develop a profound appreciation of the aquatic life in our own backyard.
This program is made possible by the Fish Creek Atlantic Salmon Club, and the Tug Hill-Black River Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
