CAMDEN, NY - The Camden Central School District Athletic Department is pleased to announce that freshman Abigail Hebble and junior Adam Gonzalez have been selected as its Athlete of the Year award recipients for the 2024-25 academic year. The awards were conferred on Camden High School Awards Night, held on June 9th.
Both of this year’s recipients are returning three-sport athletes.
Abigail Hebble
Whether it was on the field, on the mat, or on the diamond, Hebble wasted no time in making a year-round impact in her first year at Camden High School.
She most recently spent the spring contributing tremendously to Camden’s second straight Section III softball title as one of the area’s most polished two-way players. As Camden’s third different primary starting pitcher in three years, Hebble assumed total command of the circle to guide her team to a 16-4 record, the Tri-Valley League Pioneer Division title, and a second straight sectional crown. She recorded a 2.80 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 120 innings of work, and allowed less than a hit per inning over the course of the campaign. At the plate, she batted .456 with 2 home runs, 22 runs batted in, and 23 runs scored. She was recently chosen as a first team All-CNY selection and a first team all-star in the Tri-Valley League.
In the winter, Hebble completed her third varsity season as a member of the girls’ wrestling program - and had her best campaign to date. She was crowned the Section II champion at 165 pounds with a thrilling decision victory over Jasmine Ousley of General Brown, and went on to represent Camden in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls’ Wrestling State Championship in Albany. She previously appeared in the 2024 NYSPHSAA State-Wide Girls’ Wrestling Invitational as an eighth grader. For the 2024-25 season, she had a 13-7 record with nine victories coming by way of pin.
In the Fall, Hebble saw regular playing time as part of the defensive corps for Camden’s varsity field hockey team. That unit allowed the third-fewest goals in the Tri-Valley League. The Blue Devils were 11-6 overall and claimed the top overall seed in the Section III Class B Tournament. Hebble scored her only goal of the season during postseason play.
Adam Gonzalez
Just get the ball (or bat) into his hands, and he will deliver. That’s some fairly sound advice when you’re playing with Adam Gonzalez. The junior excelled across football, basketball, and baseball seasons to earn this year’s honors.
Gonzalez was a force at the plate, on the mound, and in the field for the Blue Devil baseball team as a true everyday triple threat. At the dish, he logged a .478 batting average with one home run, seven doubles, and a triple in 69 at-bats. He scored 22 runs and batted in 15 more. He made eight pitching appearances with a 6.89 ERA and 17 strikeouts for the Blue Devils. When he wasn’t pitching, he manned a vital defensive position at shortstop. The Blue Devils were 13-9 overall and made it to the Section III quarterfinals under head coach Jake Bates.
His play on the hardwood kept Camden’s boys’ basketball team in the discussion for the TVL Pioneer Division Title until the end of the season. He averaged 8.2 points per game, drained 23 three point field goals, and was second on the team with 56 assists. He also had 70 rebounds and 26 steals. Gonzalez scored in double figures seven different times during the season for head coach Mason Swancott. The Blue Devils were 10-11 overall and appeared in the Section III Class A Tournament.
In the Fall, Gonzalez grabbed hold of the starting quarterback job for the Camden varsity football team. He completed over 60 percent of his passes for over 1,000 yards and fourteen passing touchdowns, and added nearly 400 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns to his account. He also occasionally worked at receiver on offense, and played defensive back on the other side of the ball for coach Bates.
