On Monday, November 17th, Mrs. Dacey’s AC131 Business and Personal Law Class had the opportunity to host a pair of guests from the American Red Cross.
Mr. Tom Pillsworth and Ms. Judith Pollman facilitated a presentation entitled “Even War Has Rules” - a cursory look at the history and principles of International Humanitarian Law, the Geneva Convention, and how the Red Cross Movement has participated in humanitarian efforts in times of emergency and conflict worldwide.
Pillsworth, a long time volunteer, was the presenter. His service in the organization includes volunteering at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, managing a Red Cross military station in Baghdad, Iraq, and responding to an array of domestic events. Beyond his volunteer service, he is also a celebrated High School and College lacrosse coach from New York’s Capital Region, including two stints at Division I Siena College. He introduced the game to a group of soldiers during his time in Iraq.
He spoke about the history of the International Red Cross and its origins in America as well, bringing up key figures such as Henry Durant, Clara Barton, and Francis Lieber. Central to his message was preserving the human element, regardless of the circumstances, through dignity, impartiality, and neutrality to help those in need.
Thank you for stopping by, and for your passion for volunteerism and service!
