CAMDEN, NY - The Camden Central School District Board of Education is pleased to announce it has selected Mr. Jason P. Evangelist to serve as its next Superintendent of Schools. The appointment was confirmed at a special meeting held on Monday, June 30th, 2025. He officially assumed his permanent duties on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025.

“I am deeply honored to be named Superintendent of Schools for the Camden Central School District,” Evangelist said. “Since joining the Camden CSD Team four years ago, I have been grateful for the warm welcome and unwavering support I’ve received from our incredible students, talented staff, passionate community members, and dedicated Board of Education. It is a privilege to be part of a school community that is so committed to putting students first, and I look forward to continuing our work supporting the success of every student.”

Evangelist brings a tremendous wealth of educational leadership experience across a career spanning 26 years. He brings a commitment to supporting student success, delivering exceptional experiences, focusing on student well-being, and building a thriving learning community to Camden’s top administrative post. Since 2021, he has served as Camden’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. He has also performed the duties of Interim Superintendent of Schools for the District since late December.

As Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Evangelist has been responsible for all aspects of instructional leadership, professional development, and curriculum oversight with the District. An immediate priority was the introduction of the Multi-Tier System of Supports framework to enable targeted student interventions. He collaborated with instructional and administrative staff to launch a grassroots elementary literacy initiative based in the “Science of Reading” philosophy. He has also provided his oversight to developing the District’s portfolio of early childhood programming for students two and three years old, including the re-introduction of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. At the upper grade levels, he helped to introduce a manufacturing/engineering school-to-work program in cooperation with International Wire.

Evangelist has prior Superintendent experience in the Holland Patent Central School District. He served in that role from January 2017 to June 2021. He has been working as a teacher or administrator in the region since 1999, when he began teaching in a multi-age elementary classroom in the Whitesboro Central School District. Evangelist has also served as an assistant principal in the Westmoreland Central School District, principal at Oriskany’s Nicholas A. Walbran Elementary, and as the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning, and Accountability for grades K-4 in the Rome City School District.

His appointment to the role of Superintendent comes after a comprehensive search process for the Board that has been in effect since early January. A search was conducted in partnership with Madison Oneida BOCES District Superintendent & CEO, Scott A. Budelmann. The process began with opportunities for the school community to offer feedback on what it desired in a new leader. A community survey was conducted, and five stakeholder advisory committees were convened to bring a range of perspectives to the table.

Nine potential candidates stepped forward for consideration, and four were selected to interview with the Board of Education. A three round interview process halved the pool of candidates to two finalists. Finalists interviewed with the Stakeholder Advisory Committees, and feedback from those interviews was forwarded to the Board Members to assist in making a final decision.

Board President Katherine Stone said that Evangelist’s track record with the District helped him stand out in the process among a tremendous pool of candidates.

"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Jason into the role of Superintendent," Stone said. "Over the last four years, he has routinely demonstrated that he is a tremendous asset to our District. He is a proven leader who strives to give our students, staff, and community a positive experience in our schools each day. We look forward to continuing to work with him for many years to come."

A lifelong resident of nearby Rome, Evangelist has always known Camden to be a proud community. In this position, he sees an opportunity to position the District to maximize its potential while honoring its storied past along the way.

“Being a Blue Devil is a tremendous source of pride,” Evangelist said. “We have so much to celebrate and be proud of as we honor Camden’s rich traditions. We also look forward to exploring new ways to grow and meet the evolving needs of our students and community. There is important work ahead as we strive to meet the ever-changing needs of our students. Yet, I am confident that through working collaboratively and by building on our positive momentum, we will rise to the challenge.”

Evangelist holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from SUNY Cortland, a Master of Science in Reading from SUNY Cortland, and his New York State School District Administrator Certification through SUNY Cortland and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
