CES Second Grade Classes Pumpkin Activity

There was no “Squashing” the fun in Camden Elementary School’s second grade classes last week. Students from Miss Bottini and Miss Buehler’s classroom, and Mrs. Kuc’s class participated in a pumpkin carving activity, with plenty of mathematics and ELA elements rolled in!

Each class estimated the circumference of the pumpkins in centimeters, and how many seeds were inside the pumpkins. Students worked together to pull out the seeds from each pumpkin in quantities of ten until they were all accounted for, and the results between classes were vastly different. Miss Bottini and Miss Buehler’s students pulled 510 seeds out of their class pumpkin, while Mrs. Kuc’s class discovered 179 seeds inside of theirs.

Both classes decided on a face to carve into their pumpkin, and completed a writing assignment about their experience and what they learned along the way.
