Today, we take time to reflect. We remember the lives lost, the heroes who emerged, all who had their lives changed forever, and the remarkable resilience shown by our nation 23 years ago on September 11, 2001. Never forget.

Three members of the Camden High School FFA chapter recently put their knowledge of poultry to the test against their peers from across the state, and proved that they could “talk turkey” - and other birds - with the best of the best. Students Mary Hall, Matthew Albrecht, and Kayla Winn competed in the New York State FFA Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event held at the Great New York State Fair on Friday, August 23rd. A Career Development Event is a competitive exercise that is designed to build knowledge and skills in an agriculture-relevant area, while also promoting critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and problem solving among its participants. In the case of the Poultry Evaluation CDE, students were tasked with evaluating chickens, eggs, and finished products, along with providing justification for their decisions. They also must identify poultry parts, do a carcass grading exercise, and complete a written general knowledge exam. The contest is an intensive experience that lasts about two hours from start to finish. Camden sent its competitors to participate as individuals in the senior (Grades 7-12) division. In the individual standings, freshman Mary Hall placed fifth, sophomore Matthew Albrecht was tenth, and freshman Kayla Winn placed 13th. The group was led by High School FFA advisor Erin Curtis Szalach. “I am so proud of the effort these students put into practicing for this CDE,” She said. “This was one of their first times competing in a state CDE and they rocked it! They are already EGG-cited for next year and have set great goals for themselves individually and as a team!”

Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Platt and Mr. Janes was action-packed! They introduced their class to the Steve Spangler Energy Stick. The Energy Stick is a fun science activity that can connect an entire room, or an entire school! It uses the conductivity of the human body to pass a very slight electrical current. If a whole group is holding hands, the stick will light up to indicate a complete circuit!

The Camden FFA chapter recently spent a day volunteering during the New York State Fair at the fair's Dairy Birthing Center. Patrick Eveleth answered questions from the public about the Dairy Industry. Kayla Winn, Mary Hall, and Jewel Barringer spent time educating the public on newborn calves. During their time there, they had the opportunity to witness an "Udder Miracle" as a baby calf was born before their eyes! Participation at fairs is one of many ways that the Camden FFA provides meaningful opportunities, practical experiences, and lifelong memories to its student members.

For several years, Camden CSD students have received a free breakfast and lunch through the Community Eligibility Provision without an application requirement, and that is continuing this year. While not required for meals, we still encourage all district families to fill out the Income Eligibility Form each year, regardless of circumstances. It’s free, it’s confidential, it only takes a few minutes, and it can have a positive impact on the resources available to our staff and students. See the informational graphic below to learn more about how filling out the Income Eligibility Form can make a difference in our school community. Forms are available at https://www.camdenschools.org/o/ccsd/page/food-services, and you may have also seen one come home with your child recently. Questions can be directed to the Camden CSD Business Office.
