During Friday's professional development day, we brought some of the best of the best together as Camden Middle School spent the day with the staff from another National School to Watch, Cuba-Rushford Middle School! The two schools came together for a presentation on Grading for Equity to the Middle School level, and smaller breakout sessions were offered to promote networking and closer collaboration. It was an excellent day of learning and sharing!

Mrs. Kuc's second grade class at Camden Elementary learned more about the animal kingdom with a field trip to Fort Rickey last week! As you might expect, they were big fans of the petting zoo! Thanks to our student teacher, Miss Sochia, for the pictures!

Yesterday, Miss Stone's class at CES finished their science unit on works of water and erosion. Students learned about the flow of rivers and where they come from. They learned why some beaches have different color sand and lastly we learned about erosion and landslides. Students built models of mountains using cornstarch and made it rain on their models. This allowed them to see the formation of rivers and canyons. Lastly students tested different way to protect their mountain to avoid landslides. students took notes and made adjustments to their models to more effectively protect their mountains.

Friday's morning program at CES was hosted by first graders, and featured a special guest presentation from the Camden Fire Department! This week is National Fire Prevention Week, so our local volunteer firefighters came in with some great reminders about what to do to prevent fires, and what to do if you are in a building that catches fire. They also did an equipment demonstration to help our young students become familiar with how an interior firefighter looks and sounds in full turnout gear. This helps to build trust and hopefully, facilitate a better response if any student should ever find themselves in that unfortunate situation. It's as good a time as any right now to check your smoke detectors and make/practice an evacuation plan for your household.

Last week in art class with Miss Lis, McVille 3rd graders brainstormed different images and symbols that mean something to them. Then, they created those sylmbols/images on large paper and added dots using bingo dabbers. These dots were inspired by artwork created by Yayoi Kusama. Great job!

World events, negative or positive, are an opportunity for topical and teachable moments. The recent fallout of Helene, and the conversation about Milton as it prepares to make landfall on Florida's gulf coast have sparked some curiosity among our Middle School students about how hurricanes form, and what they're capable of. To help keep students informed, Mrs. Britton has brought out some meteorology books as a featured collection.

Pictures from yesterday's semifinal defeat at top-seeded Oneida in the Section III Class B Girls Tennis Team Tournament. The Blue Devils got their lone victory of the day from Hailey Heath at second singles. The team has had a fantastic dual match season with a 12-4 record overall and a second place finish in its division of the TVL. All four of their losses came against the two TVL Division Champions: Oneida and Whitesboro. Up next is singles and doubles individual tournament play next week! Photos: Alana Golden

Last week in art class at McConnellsville with Miss Lis, kindergarteners finished up their spiders full of lines! Students learned the "Line Song," that teaches students what a horizontal, vertical and diagonal line look like. You can find these spiders crawling in the hallways of McConnellsville! If you come to visit for the Spooktacular on October 16th, or for something else, make sure you don't squish any! They're friendly!

October's character goal at McConnellsville is to be a SELF-DIRECTED learner! The student council is making daily announcements to help students learn and understand what that means, and they've also continued their campaign by making hallway posters!

Congratulations to the girls' varsity tennis team on a 3-2 win in the quarterfinal round of Section III Team Tournament play on Monday! The Blue Devils got a long-awaited win by defeating the team that eliminated them last year, South Jefferson. The Blue Devils got the edge in the match through a win at second singles by Lainie Liberatore, and victories from both doubles pairings. Abigail Arnold and Alexis Albrecht won at first doubles 6-3, 6-3, and Dolmae Honrales and Rylee Greggains secured perhaps the match's most pivotal victory with a three set win at second doubles. Camden, the fourth seed in the tournament, is back at it today for the semifinals against top-seeded Oneida. The match will start at 3:30 at Oneida High School.
