April 28, 2023 is National Historic Marker Day.
Volunteers across the U.S. can give back to their communities by participating in the third annual National Historic Marker Day on Friday, April 28. CHS students from the MVCC Dual Credit NYS History class taught by Mrs. Harney have been learning about public history and what they can do to preserve and honor historic places in our own community.
Students learned about the historic marker application process, site selection, and cleaning and maintenance. Four students from the class put their skills to the test by cleaning two Camden historic markers in town, the Camden Town Hall and Scriba Patent signs. Students observed and accessed the condition of the signs to determine what additional maintenance could be done down the road if the community chooses to do so. According to the Historical Marker Database, there are more than 177,000 markers in the US. The NYS History students will research to verify if the markers they cleaned are registered with the HBDB.org site.

Students at Camden Elementary School received a visit from local children's author Jermiko Thomas this morning! He shared one of his many inspirational stories to the students in attendance.
Jermiko is a fitting guest to have at school as we wrap up our April elementary character focus: Perseverance. He was unable to speak until the age of six, but went on to become a successful professional and published author!
We also hosted him during the District-wide reading extravaganza earlier this month, so students were excited to see that he was coming back!

Project Crenshaw is back at McConnellsville Elementary School! The fourth grade book club will be holding their annual food drive from now until May 8th! There is a drop off location in the hallway near the office, or you can send your items in with your student! Shelley Malenowski is your point of contact if you have questions.
