After reading, "How to Eat a Guava", Mrs. Paul's class at CES recently tried guavas for the first time. Then they wrote a paragraph about their experience using sensory details. Yummy!
What's your favorite fruit?

A week ago, this crew from CES was getting ready for parade time. Now, we're a week closer to our 2024 celebration!
We definitely will remember this year's festivities fondly! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Students in Mr. Petrie's Drawing for Design and Production class at CHS have been taking on the compression challenge!
The project offers students a chance to get creative with engineering a solution to a problem. They are given three sheets of paper and an arm's length of tape. Using those materials, they must use design principles to craft a base that fits inside of a nine square inch area while also standing at least three inches tall. The goal was to create a base that could withstand the most weight possible using the materials. With their bases completed, the students took turns adding textbooks on top that weigh three pounds each. During our visit this morning, we saw Jacob Hoag '27 put an impressive 32 textbooks, or approximately 96 pounds, on top of his paper base before it collapsed!
This unit has been covered by multiple class periods. The best score achieved this year was 34 textbooks, set by students Aaron Bienvenue and Kadence Walker. The current all-time record for this unit was an incredible 36 textbooks, set last year!
Thanks to Mr. Petrie and his class for an enjoyable start to the day!

We have ourselves a special birthday at McConnellsville! Miss Barber's dog, Cannoli, is one year old today! She got permission to bring her four-legged friend in to celebrate with her fourth grade class today!
Happy birthday from all of us!

We had the honor of hosting the McConnellsville Fire Department for today's National Fire Safety Week assembly! Students learned about the basics of fire safety, with a special emphasis paid to this year's national point of emphasis on kitchen fires. Did you know 49 percent of house fires start as part of a cooking-related incident?
They also met firefighters in full gear as a reminder that while they may look scary with all that equipment on, they are here to help protect us. After the indoor portion, students headed outside to tour some trucks and learn more about escaping fires in the department's new inflatable "smokehouse", which can be used to safely demonstrate escape procedures.
Some takeaways for the community to consider:
-Test your smoke detectors once a month, and keep an eye on the batteries. It is advised that you have one on every floor of your home.
-Don't leave your food/cooking appliances unattended when cooking. As a general rule, put appliances in the off position when cleaning them with any sort of cleaning product.
-Be careful with electricity. Overloaded outlets and power strips can be problematic, and you should never plug in a space heater to a power strip.
-Have a plan that includes potential points of entry and exit in the case of a fire emergency. Have a meeting place a safe distance from the home. Practice on occasion.
-Be mindful of fire safety year-round. The risk never takes a day off.
Good fire safety practices are certainly not limited to the points above. When it comes to fire safety, there is no substitute for good judgment in protecting life and property.

October 8th to October 14th is National Fire Safety Week! The McConnellsville Fire Department came to McConnellsville Elementary for their annual assembly today. One of our favorite things about this experience is the number of CCSD alumni in the fire service that you'll see giving back to our schools.
Every person in this picture attended Camden schools at some point in their life, including many who attended McConnellsville Elementary!
Thank you for your dedication in keeping our community safe!

This afternoon, the Camden High School theater classes wrapped up their fall Monologues and Dialogues! This two-day event features Theater I and Honors Theater students performing a short memorized work of their choice. For some students, it's their first taste of on-stage performance, while for others, it's a great chance to fine tune their presentation skills ahead of the upcoming Fall play!

Folks! Turf is beginning to go down at the new baseball field behind CMS! How exciting!

One of the highlights of Homecoming Saturday is the soccer alumni game! Past players from our soccer programs (and a few coaches too!) gathered at the new multipurpose turf field to play a friendly game, and the rain didn't hold back any of the intense competition that took place!

Pictures from Saturday night's game! Thanks to Emily Petrie of Valley View Studios for taking these, and our own Michael Petrie for passing them along. These are great!

On Wednesday, October 18th, we will have our next meeting of "Look at Me, I'm Three!" The fun begins at 5:30 pm, and runs until approximately 6:15 pm at Camden Elementary School.
"Look at Me, I'm Three!" is a free pre-K preparation program for students residing in the district who are three years old, or will reach their third birthday on or before December 1st, 2023. At each monthly meeting, you and your child will have the opportunity to work on basic skills for entering Pre-K, and meet their future classmates and teachers in a fun and informal environment. Sessions often include a reading activity, crafts, and a story.
As an added bonus, we will have sign-ups available for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library at this month's meeting! The Imagination Library is one of the largest book-gifting programs on the planet, and registering your child for this free and optional program allows them to receive a book through the mail each month until their fifth birthday!
We hope you're as excited about our second meeting of the year as we are to host it!
If you will be joining us for the first time, please contact Patti Ferretti at pferretti@camdencsd.org and let her know you're coming. This will help with planning activities.
