Senior student-athletes Jacob Lago and Olivia Hooker had the opportunity to represent Camden High School at one of Section III’s most prominent and prestigious events on Monday, June 9th. The duo were recognized as part of the 2025 Section III Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner held at Onondaga Community College. Held each year, the Section III Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner celebrates selected high school seniors from all 106 member schools who have distinguished themselves from their peers through exemplary athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible, a student-athlete must hold at least a 90 percent cumulative grade point average while participating in a varsity sports program. Each school can nominate two student-athletes who meet the requirements. Lago competed in cross country, spring track and field, and alpine skiing this year. He will depart CHS as the Class of 2025’s seventh-ranked graduate. He recently finished up a manufacturing/engineering internship at International Wire, and plans to enter the United States Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Program. Hooker competed in soccer, volleyball, and spring track and field in her senior year. She will graduate sixth in her class, and plans to attend Penn State University to study Physical Therapy/Kinesiology. All Section III Scholar Athlete Dinner honorees receive a scholarship check and a commemorative plaque. There are also additional awards from the sponsors, and Olivia was fortunate enough to receive an additional award from Section III’s ticketing partner, Hometown Ticketing!

McConnellsville 3rd graders had an awesome visit to the Great Swamp Conservancy! They were educated on the importance of wetlands and why it’s imperative to take care of them. They built their own wetland, learned about macroinvertebrates, and even got to catch some swamp creatures!

On Friday, May 30th, our third graders put their best foot forward at their annual district-wide track meet! While many students represent the community in youth sports, this is one of the first opportunities that our students get to represent their school in competition. Good effort and good sportsmanship are paramount to a successful event. We look forward to seeing how much they've grown when they come together for the fourth grade meet next year!

Recently, the Camden Central School District was pleased to hold its annual "Summer Reading Book Fairs" at Camden Middle School, McConnellsville Elementary, and Camden Elementary. This special event, held during the school day, gave each student a credit to spend on discounted books for their summer reading endeavors. Students have the opportunity to pick up books that fit their interests in hopes that it will drive greater engagement in reading, and it also provides important access to books to have at home for all students, regardless of circumstances. This opportunity is made possible through the support of the Tuthill Foundation Grant, and the continued generosity of the late Virginia and Stedman Tuthill. The Tuthills were longtime Camden residents who were firm supporters of students, educators, and libraries. After Stedman passed away in 1993, a grant was set up in the family name to support initiatives of the Camden Central School District, and the Camden Public Library. Virginia was a board member of the library for many years and cherished creating literacy opportunities for children. She passed away in 2014 at the remarkable age of 102. The couple's legacy lives on through initiatives such as this book fair, which has now benefited generations of students.

During Thursday's Class Night ceremony, we had the opportunity to reveal the 2025 CCSD "Seed of Selflessness" student award winner - and it's a second generation recipient! Congratulations to senior Annaka Stauring! As you may remember, her mother, Carol, was our 2024 "Seed of Selflessness" adult award winner.

27 children and families attended our June meeting of the "Look at Me, I'm Three!" program! The last meeting for this year's group featured a reading of "The Watermelon Seed" by Greg Pizzoli from Mrs. Stauring. They had watermelon ice cream pops, made crocodile puppets, and finished the night with music! It was a terrific evening as our participants stand just months away from Pre-K programs! "We had such a great year," Family School Navigator Patti Ferretti said. "We grew so much, learned so many things, made a lot of new friends and had so much fun along the way! We are ready for our next stop. Look out Pre-K, here we come!"

Yesterday, classes from Camden Middle School released the fish they've been raising into the Mad River! The fish, provided by Trout Unlimited and the Fish Creek Atlantic Salmon Club, included Brook Trout and Landlocked Atlantic Salmon this year. Some CMS superlatives to consider: 1. Mrs.Turner's classroom had the largest fish among CMS classes this year. 2. Dr. Goff's classroom had the most fish make it to release day this year. Hopefully, many of these young fish will grow up to be a vital part of the local ecosystem, and along the way, our students feel more connected to the natural environment around them!
