As part of this year's celebrations at CHS and CMS, our CFLR Prevention Specialist, Ambur Kowalski, arranged to have Reality Check visit during lunch periods to speak with students about the dangers of vaping and how marketing targets youth. As part of the week, students created drawings and wrote pledges reflecting their commitment to staying drug-free.

On Wednesday, Camden Elementary and McConnellsville Elementary welcomed celebrated children's author (and Utica, NY native) Daryl Cobb for a visit! Students in grades K-4 were treated to his message that included the love of reading and writing. He even recruited some teachers and students to participate in his engaging, informative, and entertaining presentation!

The students formulated their hypotheses and brought forth their allegations - but there was an important plot twist that changed everything: There was no “witch” after all!
The activity was designed to teach the class about how mob mentality and hysteria can lead to false accusations, just as those factors led people to be prosecuted for witchcraft centuries ago.
In a fascinating turn of fortune, the activity also aligns with Mrs. Smith’s own family history. She discussed her own family genealogy research with the class. That research revealed a family connection back to Lydia Gilbert, who was the second woman and seventh person to be convicted of witchcraft in the State of Connecticut in 1654.

You never know where you'll find a new twin! Our own Sunshine Britton did exactly that at today's Leatherstocking Regional Conference for library staff! She came across Library TA Melanie Goodwin from the Gilboa-Conesville Central School, and knew she had to get a picture!
Sunshine and her CMS Library colleague, Jennine Bloomquist, were two of the conference's featured presenters this year!

Go Blue Devils!

This annual event gathers the CES community for hours of family activities, books, and refreshments. Among the highlights are the carnival games set up by teachers. Classics such as “Pin the Spider on the Web” and “Pumpkin Ring Toss” were joined by new additions like “The Human Slot Machine”. Craft activities included “Lollipop Ghosts”, a stress ball making station, and leaf rubbings with Connected Community Schools. Students also left with free books from the Title I initiative, and could also browse and purchase additional books from the Scholastic Book Fair.
Due to some dynamic weather throughout the day, this year’s event was held indoors, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance!

Support students in Mrs. Malenowski's IFA Third Grade Reading Group by sending in your spare change to school as they raise money for the Wanderer's Rest Humane Association in Canastota! The group has set an initial goal of $500, and they are looking to reach that goal by Friday, November 7th.
In line with this initiative, the group is reading the classic "Shiloh" by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, which is about the efforts of a young boy to give the title character, a beagle, a better chance at life after prolonged mistreatment. The students are hoping to make a difference by helping plenty of dogs and cats from across the area through this yearly initiative.

Self-Directed learners were in the spotlight at McConnellsville for October's Character Assembly!
4th grade students performed a skit about being Self Directed, and students in grades K-4 were recognized by their teachers for demonstrating this trait throughout the month! By being a self-directed learner and person, you become someone that you can depend on!
